Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

It was another humid day here in South Australia, the weather once again not quite what we South Aussies are used to living in the driest State in the driest Continent on Earth.
The weather pattern seems to have certainly changed and not only are we humans not enjoying this change, Wildlife could be suffering as well.

Well we, Colin and I, called him Turner as his abode was Turners Gully Road, Clarendon. A Grand Old Man was this Koala but very sadly he was humanely euthanized just a few days ago.

We moved to the Hills of Clarendon a few short months ago, an amazing change from living by the Ocean. It was a move that we both desired as being Wildlife Photographers the Hills we felt this offered us a new challenge and greater variety.
It was a rough start for us as the big rains in South Australia came last September. They came with such a force there was so much flooding and damage, rains that most of us have not seen for many, many a year.
We cleaned up, we re-established waterlogged gardens and started to enjoy the very reason we had moved to the Hills. We listened to the vast amount of bird calls but one call that we were not ofay with and which upset and scared our two Border-collies and cat, was the loud bellowing of the male Koalas and especially on a still night.
The males bellowed, they grunted, they beat their chests with their fists, testosterone filled the air and our dogs and cat simply scuttled inside seeking refuge from the amazing noise that came from these males.
Turner was the first Koala we spotted, well actually one of my Border-collies spotted him first.
She, LittleB, became our Koala spotter. We made her keep her distance as we did not want to upset nor scare the Koalas while keeping her safe as well.
My Border-collies have been taught to stay behind when we are out in the field. They have been taught to never chase any form of Wildlife which for Colin and I is also paramount with our Photography.
Last November LittleB spotted a Koala sitting on the ground next to a large Gum Tree. She seemed distressed, she kept going near the Koala then retuning back to us, we thought the Koala was possibly just resting as it was a rather humid day again, unusual for the month of November.

It was late afternoon and Turner stayed where he was until dusk. We could see he was keeping an eye on us and the pups with Oscar the cat not overly interested. The sun was going down and the air was beginning to cool and Turner was on the move looking for a suitable tree to climb and have his supper. He seemed quite normal to us as we are novices with Koala knowledge, he simply munched away on his juicy Gum leaves. We went inside and the day for us closed down but later again that night we heard the bellowing of the Grand Old Man.
That clear and starry night Turner was joined in harmony with another male close by, now two were bellowing out their calls to each other and what a racket they both made boasting quite possibly who owned what female and who owned what piece of territory in Turners Gully Road. Colin and I smiled and we both realised we had truly moved to the Adelaide Hills.
Kookaburras calling their glorious laugh, Koalas grunting and bellowing, Kangaroos bounding through the neighbours property.
What more could we possibly ask for.
The weeks went by, Christmas came and was gone and we found our other male Koala, a lot younger but no less timid as Turner was to us. This male is small by comparison with possibly being from a mating only last year. He lives up in the neighbours back trees only sometimes venturing onto our acre of paradise. One day while walking down our driveway there he was sitting in the fork of a tree only two metres off the ground. Again LittleB was fascinated as now she had another Koala to sit, mother and watch. This little man also watched with curiosity possibly trying to work out what was staring at him. He stayed around for a few days enjoying the Gum trees on our property but finally left as Turner was it seemed, becoming a bit grumpier day by day.
Turner again appeared only a week ago when the temperatures soared into the low 40's. Hot, humid conditions once again and this time LittleB found him at the base a Plum tree right out the front of our home. He was near the tap and hose and we had already placed water out for all the Wildlife. Birdbaths a plenty and this time many bowls on the ground as we noticed even the smallest of Skinks were seeking out a water supply. What we Wildlife enthusiasts do to help give every animal a much needed water supply in very, very hot conditions. The Australian Magpies also are a treat to watch jumping, running and simply laying down under the sprinklers on the lawns, comical to say the least.
Back to Turner at the base of the Plum tree. I turned on the hose and sprayed the tree butt with water, Turner woke and started lapping the water off the tree. I had been informed that Koalas don't drink water, they get their moisture from leaves but this Koala certainly was lapping up all he could get so we placed a bowl of water not too far from him.
Night fell again, more rains came and the next morning he was gone back up into the trees feeding on those ever delicious Gum leaves.
Colin was out hand watering due to the dreadful humid conditions once again and found Turner this time on the ground next to a Gum tree a couple of metres down an embankment. The soft earth was damp and Turner appeared to be asleep. Colin called to me and I suggested he hose the butt of the tree again and see what response we got from him.
He immediately responded and started lapping the water from the tree so again we got another bowl and this time Colin placed it on the ground next to him. No arguments from Turner and to our amazement his sense of smell took him straight to the bowl. He stumbled a bit but we thought it was the soft earth unsettling his balance. He drank and drank and kept drinking so much we felt possibly he may have been dehydrated. After what seemed an eternity I dashed and got my camera so I could video a Koala lapping water. I have also aired another video of Turner doing what Koalas do in trees so all those around the globe may have the privileged of seeing the antics of an Australian Marsupial.
It was then that Colin noticed Turners eyes were very congested and he seemed to have a palsy on the right side of his mouth and his head was also tilted to the right.
We rang Fauna Rescue SA (Koala Rescue) immediately, it was Sunday, they came straight away and checked him over, Turner was gravely ill.
He was very gently placed into a cage and taken away to the Vet who would assess his situation but very sadly for Turner he was euthanized immediately. Turner was suffering with the dreadful disease Chlamydia which for a Koala is a very painful death. Euthanasia was the best and most humane option for Turner and we will sorely miss the bellowing from the Grand Old Man of Turners Gully Road.
His progeny live on and who knows if the young male Koala is one of his ..
A short video of Colin helping the Koala we named "Turner"
Fauna Rescue SA (Koala Rescue) promptly attended, reviewed the situation and took appropriate measures for him.
Chlamydia in the Koala population is a highly contagious disease with a severely painful death so Turners suffering was laid to rest by qualified Veterinary Surgeons.
Who said Birds don't have Soul!

They came daily to Carol's front yard the old Corella couple, time and time again seeking each others company.
Never did the old birds mix with the rest of the flock, they flew in at dawn and left at dusk seeking their personal little bush to sit under all day as both were too old and tired to fly high up into the trees above and were at risk from ground predators. Age was against them both but this is where they chose to take refuge.
Carol looked after them, she watched over them, she helped to feed them, they became her special little friends...
Many years earlier this couple would have been a thriving pair, playing as they do high in the trees, frolicking just being a pair of Little Corellas.
Time stands still for no one! Not even Little Corellas.
This little pair most probably raised many young over the years and still they never parted.
They became such a term of endearment for Carol, a daily treat for her when they would arrive in the late afternoon taking longs sips of water from the many bird baths in Carol's front gardens.
A place of beauty, a place of serenity, a place where Carol called home on Kangaroo Island, a place where Carol shared with all her beloved fine feathered friends, including her two most precious pups.
We, Colin and I were most privileged to be a part of this story, also permission being given to photograph around Carol's wonderful home and neighbouring gardens for us was a real treat indeed.

As you are all guessing by now this story has indeed a very sad ending!

It was only a few weeks ago that the old Corella couple had started to fail, their life coming to a close and Carol's friends were going to be no more.

It all happened very quickly, the pair appeared late in the afternoon as they always did unfortunately the male had lost his beak, it had simply worn off with very old age and Carol found him the next morning quietly lying on his side, he had passed away...

The old Corella couple as I mentioned shared this bush every day and as you can see from where they are hiding they form a heart.. "A Companion Heart"

Heart formed Little Corella's

A very sad day indeed for Carol but what to do now with his lady companion!

Carol very carefully picked the old boy up and wrapped him in a towel, placed him in a box and quietly buried him all the while the female was looking on.

It is said that many birds mate forever, this Little Corella pair were "Companions Forever" as two days later Carol found the little female had also passed away probably from a broken heart as she had lost her true mate and soul companion.

For Carol now! She had lost her companions, Carol wept, for her grief was complete having shared many years with these special Little Corellas that a bond had naturally been formed.
Carol removed the body of the male Corella from where she had first buried him and placed the two perfect little pair together creating a new burial site in a section of her garden where flowers were blooming as it was the first day of Spring.

The Golden Hour ~ The Golden Rule ~ Silence is Golden

Our Photographic Workshop was conducted over a two weekend period, falling on Saturday 17th May 2014 (Day 1) and finishing up on Saturday 24th May 2014 (Day 2).
Colin and I gave our time gratis to The Willunga Environment Centre as they promote our photographic book "VIVONNE BAY BLUE" & DVD "Wings Above~Island Below".

We ventured out with an avid Nature Group of people from all different walks of life into the "Wilds" of the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park, South Australia on day one of our Workshop, then off to Old Noarlunga, South Australia for the second one.

We met and were greeted by many eager faces in one of the car parks at the Scrub. Some of the group were wearing unusual & colourful apparel, a couple had new boots on..! Most were carrying different types of cameras and a few were in just for the walk.
Off we set, me in the front and Colin coming up in the rear as the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park can be quite daunting to the novice and sometimes also to the knowledgeable.
Single file along the Western Grey Kangaroo tracks was where we guided them, sometimes stopping just to gaze in wonder at the magnificent Resin the Wattle trees produce when under stress. We were fortunate to be able to show how the sun beams through the Resin creating amazing star bursts and equally amazing how Resin can actually resemble Nature itself.

Resin from Wattle Trees

In this Resin you will see a Frog on a tree.
As we wandered along, I mentioned to the group that they be watchful of Spider Webs as occasionally one does walk through a web and the thought of a Spider crawling in your hair or sitting quietly on your back does give rise to a little concern..!

Along the track we explored many beautiful dead and gnarly old gum trees, trees that at one time held the vast sand drifts together. The Coral Lichen was a rare sight and the Yacka's prevailed everywhere.
No Snake sightings, as there was a fair bit of gossip and noise along the way from the troops so this would have moved the snakes on fairly quickly...!
Bird sightings were not abundant as it really was a little too early in the afternoon but we assured the group that the Golden Hour would bring on a pleasant display.
Photography with Birds and Wildlife does require patience, also the need for silence is of paramount. It is very difficult when as I mentioned, we had people from all walks of life who were on board for very different reasons but at the end of the day we had made some firm friendships.
We moved on further now beginning to circle back to where we had begun but first we had to make a stop at Cliffs Waterhole where normally there are an abundant variety of Birds to be seen.
Pelicans, Ducks, and the Australian White Ibis were enjoying the Waterhole as now after the breaking rains it was again full. The Ibis were inquisitive to say the least, all the while watching us from high up on one of those very old gnarly dead gum trees.

Reflections

The reflections in the water were simply exquisite as there was no breeze inside Cliffs Waterhole which is thickly surrounded by masses of sapling Gum trees so once again cameras went into action.

The day was drawing to a close, the light was beginning to fade, the Dragonflies were making the most of it in the still waters, the reflections in the late afternoon were simply magical.

As we found our way out from Cliffs Waterhole, we all clambered through wire fences where the Kangaroos had managed to break through. Weary from our very long walk especially in the soft sands, all the while climbing over broken boughs from dead trees to ducking under prickly bushes, my thoughts were on a nice hot bath. One gentleman who had purchased a brand new pair of walking boots found that they indeed needed to be broken in, so he actually walked the entire distance with only his socks on his feet. Thank goodness the sand was soft...!
The highlight of Day One were the Western Grey Kangaroos. It was now dusk, it was still and very calm and quiet, we had set out at 1.00pm that day and now all were quite weary, so we stopped a while and watched the Kangaroos waking up from their day of rest as the sun was beginning to go down. Some of us stood and some of us sat but everyone who had a camera was focussed on the Kangaroos...! They were giving us all a grand performance with most grazing on the grasses, some females were feeding their young Joeys who were out of the pouch but the amazing sight was all the boxing going on with the young males. A few older males were meaning business and laying down their territory but mostly it was a Boxing Kangaroo Session that stole the day.
As Colin and I ventured out for our second Bird & Wildlife Photography Workshop we realized that it should have been called a Nature Photographic Workshop. Our mostly budding and a couple of skilled photographers were photographing anything and everything that Mother Nature had created. We had had excellent feedback from the week prior that everyone had enjoyed themselves immensely so much so that they would like to form an ongoing photographic, walking and sometimes talking group but Silence really is Golden and necessary when photographing Birds and Wildlife.

The Golden Rule, is more a photographers code: Take Nothing and leave only Footprints, and The Golden Hour, photographing at Dawn and Dusk when most Wildlife is very active so patience is definitely a big plus...!

We met again this time at Old Noarlunga, South Australia and todays Workshop was indeed going to be very different. Today we were going to talk cameras and settings, what the group may have achieved from the week prior, walking around the delightful Old Noarlunga's Onkaparinga River banks and hoping to see a different variety of Birds and maybe the odd Koala or two.

We ventured across the sway bridge, it sways a little to some but when you are trying to take a photo from this bridge and someone is walking across it, it sways quite a lot and no amount of camera shake nor OS is going to stop vibration...... The reflections on this part of the Onkaparinga River are absolutely breathtaking and definitely worth a shot or six..!

We came across Monarch Butterflies mating and laying their eggs, we listened to Kookaburras laughing in the trees, not too much around again as it was a bit early in the afternoon so now was that time when patience is a virtue and a must for a Bird and Wildlife Photographer. The Golden Hour was still a few hours away so it was time to walk, chat, compare, watch, listen and learn. We all learnt many valuable examples in the two day Photographic Workshop and sharing knowledge is what Colin and I were giving to this wonderful Group and yes Colin and I also learnt a few more tricks as well.

We came across Ducks, little Grey Teals paddling in the reflection of the waters, it was a great chance to gain some beautiful photography if only for a colourful scene. There was a Darter sunning and drying itself off giving us all a grand display turning and twisting, rotating itself and showing off every angle of its body and wings. Photography was difficult with this bird as there were so many reflections from not only the bird, but the grasses that surrounded it as well.
The day was now progressing on and everyone had seemed to split up. We had little groups everywhere dotted around the town of Old Noarlunga, fortunately mobile phones kept us informed as to the where-about of each person. Today was okay to split up as we had lots of land marks that we could all meet up again at, but in the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park the week prior that was impossible as you could go behind a bush if nature called and bingo, where have all the people gone...!!!!!

The Nankeen Night Herons had been sleeping all day as they are night feeders, unlike most other birds that go to roost at night... We had managed to photograph them when we first arrived at Old Noarlunga, South Australia and for those in the Group who had not seen this species of bird before, well this was a real treat for them. The adult Nankeen Night Heron is a very striking bird and never have I seen one unclean before. They must preen themselves for hours as we did witness this prior to them leaving their daytime roost.

Well the time had come and the Golden Hour was upon us, some of the group had gone due to commitments elsewhere, a couple of others gave up as frustration had set in while waiting for Birds to appear but most stayed on patiently. We chatted about cameras and their settings, we chatted about further photographic workshops, one lady asked me if she could take me home with her and Colin, well he shared his wonderful knowledge about "WINE"....

To sum it all up Colin and I had a wonderful time with this enthusiastic group of budding, novices and skilled photographers. They learnt, we shared, they shared, we learnt..!

Through the camera lens to Nature's Canvas

The sensational colours that are so pleasing to my eye are always depicted in a Sunset or Sunrise. Where could one possibly gain more pleasure, than from sitting a while soaking up all the colour that explodes across the skies when the sun is rising and when the sun is setting.

A phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering causes light from the Sun to bounce off tiny particles in the atmosphere and scatter in different directions. Sunlight consists of many different colours from red, which has the longest wavelength of all visible light, through to violet at the blue end of the spectrum which has the shortest wavelength. Blue light is scattered more effectively than the other colours and this is why the sky normally appears blue to us.

At sunrise or sunset, however! When the Sun is low on the horizon the light rays must pass through more of the atmosphere and therefore bounce off more molecules than at other times of the day, this means that more blue light gets scattered away before the light reaches your eyes.

Other colours such as red, orange and yellow can therefore continue to pass through the atmosphere unaffected, creating beautiful colours at the start and end of the day.

Bushfires, pollution, dust, volcanic eruptions will also create spectacular Sunsets and in these two photos below a few days after fires had raged out of control in Victoria February 2009 the skies in Adelaide went blood red.
My love of photography extends way beyond birds and wildlife. Mother Nature at her best can give any photographer such thrills, whether it be skies, seas, storms, sunlight casting shadows on green and yellow fields, whatever and wherever it may be it is all about being out there and getting that shot...!
Wildlife Abounds in the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park

Many times we go out photographing, sometimes we come back with memorable photos! But on occasion we come back with something stunning that tells a tale of excitement, wonder and nature at her best at the same time giving us a workout that no gym could possibly ever give!

While keeping an eye on everything that moves in the air to the ground, occasionally we find something keeping an eye on us!

We wend our way through the scrub ever watchful for snakes that may slither through the tall grasses or be sunning themselves around broken limbs from trees that are decaying on the ground!

Lizards at times may appear but the danger of snakes is a high risk especially on a hot summers day.

Our focus is mainly on sounds, sounds from birds, sounds coming from dense foliage, looking up, looking down! Listening.

It may be the humming of busy bees, the call of a Nankeen Kestrel high up looking for its mate, it may simply be the chewing noise from the Kangaroos feeding from the grass or the trees but whatever it is it is always the sound that gives us a the thrill that some form of wildlife is definitely close by.

Red Kangaroos abound this wonderful Conservation Park and we have noticed that the more we venture there, the wildlife accept our presence.

The other day when the temperature was around 43deg this male Red Kangaroo seemed not too interested in me so I sat and rested a while in the shade of a Wattle tree and spent some time enjoying his company.

Wildlife photography for Colin and myself is all about capturing the moment. It can be anything that Mother Nature creates. While I sit in the shade of the Wattle tree Colin is photographing same.
His photography is very different from mine. Colin photographs macro (up close) and the thrill of finding the incredible resin that leaks from these Wattle trees is a reward in itself. It is the beginnings of how Copal/Amber starts. Sometimes he finds insects trapped inside the resin, sometimes it may be a leaf but in all instances each tiny piece of resin that leaks from these trees is spectacular in every shape and form whether it be yellow, pink, red or blue.
From Brown Goshawks soaring high up in the blue skies keeping vigilant in their vast domain to the little Grey Fantails flittering about in the dense growth.
The Red Kangaroos lazing around sharing this amazing park with the Brush-tailed Possums, Short-beaked Echidnas and Bats.
The Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park is home to an abundant variety of birds and wildlife for all to enjoy.

It is home to a diverse range of rare plants and is recognised as a significant area for the conservation and protection of the region's flora. Situated in the Willunga sub-basin, the Aldinga Scrub is an impressive backdrop of sand dunes, and sand blows (mobile dunes), mallee scrub, remnant red gum forests and closed heaths.
Several walking trails provide fantastic opportunities to enjoy the park's habitat and coastal plant life.
Lacy coral lichen, nardoo, hairy sedge and several species of orchids are among the park's rare species of flora.
The pleasure of being with nature and being able to share a Photographer's Day Out with everyone is about as good as it gets.
As we leave the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park for the day the sun is beginning to go down and a calm is settling in. The Red Kangaroos are quietly grazing, the Magpies are heralding their magical harmonies, the little birds are all going to roost but we are not alone as eyes from deep within the trees have opened wide watching us leave, and I take my final photo.
Picture Perfect ... Superb Blue-wrens

A delightful tale of a delightful bird from Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island found its way into our camera lens on a very cold and bleak wintry day. It all began for Colin and I while on our annual wedding anniversary trip to the Island ... August 2008.
The morning started out with yellow skies, icy grounds everywhere and so cold was the air it hurt even to breathe, so we decided it was going to be an in-house day for us!
With heaters set on high and cameras set at all windows waiting for our little Blue friends to appear, our computers were working overtime. The holiday home "Koopalanda Dreaming" - Point Ellen where we stay is on the boundary of a National Conservation Park, a small part of Kangaroo Island's extreme rugged coastline. Wildlife abounds all over and this little wren family would appear again and again as they did on this South Australia's coldest day on record! Point Ellen is atop the stunning Vivonne Bay Beach, where rips can be deadly, waves can be surfed, boats can be moored, whales give birth, simply a beautiful beach to behold. On the leeward side, huge swells, deadly waves, hidden reefs. KI's Coastal Conflict post (5) tells of more:
Our photographic book, while it does not have too many words! it presents a view of looking through a window into the private lives of the Superb Blue-wren.
The Super Blue-wren can be found in almost any area that has at least a little dense under-growth for shelter, including grasslands with scattered shrubs, moderately thick forests, woodlands and heaths. It is a jaunty wren and is a great favourite, not only for the beautiful colouring of the males, but because it has adapted well to human intrusion and readily lives in gardens and parks where it is easily seen. The species is sedentary and territorial also exhibiting a high degree of sexual dimorphism; the male in breeding plumage has a striking blue forehead, ear coverts, mantle and tail with a black mask and a black or dark blue throat. Non breeding males are grey/brown in plumage, black/brown legs, bill and area around the eye whereas the female same grey/brown plumage, orange/brown legs, bill and area around the eye with a green/blue tail. All but the very old males - four years of age or more, moult into a brown/grey non-breeding plumage in which they superficially resemble the females this giving the early impression that males were polygamous as the dull-coloured birds were taken for females. Like other fairywrens, the Superb Blue-wren is notable for several peculiar behavioural characteristics, the birds are socially monogamous and sexually promiscuous, meaning that although they form pairs between one male and one female, each partner will mate with other individuals and even assist in raising the young from such pairings. Male wrens pluck yellow petals and display them to females as a part of a courtship display.
Kangaroo Island's Glossy-Black Cockatoo

The Glossy-Black Cockatoo was first described by Dutch naturalist Coenraad J Terminck in 1807. The scientific name honours the English ornithologist, John Latham.
The Glossy-Black Cockatoo's closest relative is the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, the two species form a subgenus Calyptorhynchus within the genus of the same name. They are distinguished from the other Black Cockatoos of the subgenus Zanda by their significant sexual dimorphism and calls of the juveniles, one a squeaking begging call, the other a vocalization when swallowing food.
The South Australian subspecies of the Glossy-Black Cockatoo,
Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus has disappeared from the South Australian mainland and is currently restricted to Kangaroo Island. It is listed as Endangered under the Australian Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The current population is estimated around 350 birds, including approximately 200 mature individuals.
The male Glossy-Black Cockatoo is predominantly black with a chocolate brown head and striking caudal red patches. The female is a duller dark brown, irregular yellow patches on head and neck and the bill is paler. The red tail panels generally have black bars with yellow edges on the inner webs. Juveniles, as female, head darker often with small spots on breast and shoulder. An adult will grow to be about 46-50cms (18-20inches) in length. The birds are found in open forest and woodlands and usually feed on seeds of the she-oak, Allocasuarina verticillata, always using their left foot, never their right! It holds the cones in its foot and shreds them with its powerful bill before removing the seeds with its tongue. Small parties, commonly up to ten birds spend most of the day quietly feeding in the foliage of she-oaks, (casuarina trees), the only sound being the busy clicking of the bills as they demolish the hard woody seed capsules.
The South Australian subspecies of the Glossy-Black Cockatoo requires high quality Drooping She-oak woodland for foraging and large hollow bearing eucalypts for roosting and nesting habitat.
Western Grey Kangaroos

The Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) is a large and very common kangaroo or macropod, found across almost the entire southern part of Australia.
The subspecies on Kangaroo Island, South Australia is known as the Kangaroo Island, kangaroo. The Western Grey Kangaroo is one of the largest kangaroos in Australia. It weighs 28-54kgs and its length is 0.84-1.1mt with a 80-100cm tail, standing approximately 1.3mts tall.
It exhibits sexual di-morphism with the male up to twice the size of the female. It has thick, coarse fur with colouring ranging from pale grey to brown, its throat, chest and belly have a paler colour. The kangaroo feeds at night, mainly on grasses but also on leafy shrubs and low trees. It has the name "Stinker" because mature males have a distinct curry like odour! The kangaroo lives in groups of up to 15. The males compete for females during the breeding season. During these "boxing" contests, they would lock arms and try to push each other over. Usually the dominant male in the group mates. The gestation period is 30-31 days, after which the baby joey attaches to the teat in the female pouch for 130-150 days.
There are two subspecies of the Western Grey Kangaroo:
Macropus fuliginosus fuliginosus of Kangaroo Island, and
Macropus fuliginosus melanops, which has a range of different forms that intergrade clinally from west to east.
The Western Grey Kangaroo is also referred to as a Black-faced Kangaroo, Mallee Kangaroo, Sooty Kangaroo and Carno Kangaroo.
Misty has her own story to tell as she was raised by Coralie and Smilie, owners of the Rustic Blue Museum/Gallery on Kangaroo Island.

Misty was a joey and found alive in her mothers pouch after a car accident, quite young but capable of being hand-reared. She survived but sadly her mother was killed as many kangaroos become victims especially on the roads on Kangaroo Island.

We met Misty when she was only around a year old and the photo below shows her asleep in the dandelions on Coralie and Smilie's property. Misty has now grown into an incredibly gentle kangaroo who has just become a mother herself.

If you travel to Kangaroo Island, we are certain that if you call into the Rustic Blue Museum/Gallery it is more than likely that you will meet "Misty", her joey and hear of her story.

Meeting With A Rogue Wave

Kangaroo Island's coastline has everything, from surf pounded cliffs to becalmed coves, famous sweeps of sand to secret rocky inlets.

Point Ellen, the western headland of Vivonne Bay, about 60km from Kingscote is my subject for today.
The day began with thoughts of adventure especially for our Border-collie pups keen for their morning's walk to one of Point Ellen's little coves. The cove Colin & I chose was perfect for all with only a short climb down a small cliff face, over some rugged gnarly rocks and finally onto a pure white sandy beach littered with drift wood, seaweed, broken shells, just all the right ingredients for a good fossick.
The stunning colours in the crystal clear waters of this lagoon reflected so bright that we were nearly blinded by the sheer dazzle of it all.
The cove was secure or so we thought as there was a reef some 150 metres out to sea from the cliff face which broke the huge pounding deadly waves that from time to time have taken unsuspecting lives.
Our pups swam in the cold crisp clear waters while Colin enjoyed poking under stones and looking into the small cliff face caves, just doing what one does while on a remote desolate beach.
I had my 500mm lens attached to my camera so off I trotted across the reef towards the open seas to get some great photography of these huge waves. Every eighth wave seemed to be the big one so I positioned myself in a fairly safe and secure spot and waited!
The 500mm lens reaches pretty far out to sea so this is one huge advantage when photographing waves, especially big ones!
The locals told us to always keep an eye out for the possibility of a rogue wave as there have been numerous victims to such encounters.
Trying to show the hugeness of these angry waves is not easy.
Finding a comparison also is not easy!
In this photo with only waves in it the aqua wave is my big wave, the black wave at the back was in this instance, my comparison!

You got it, A ROGUE WAVE!
It came at us fast, I yelled to Colin to get the pups out of the water and run to the cliffs while I had my running shoes on as well.
Our good fortune was the reef!
It broke the wave and a wall of water about a metre high simply came at us.
By the time it reached us it washed up around our feet, we had made it far enough away as not to get caught. What happened next was simply scary! The wave that had broken over the reef and washed up to the cliff face went back out to sea taking all the water out of the lagoon...!
We stood there in a state of disbelief realizing just how deadly these waves can be and how vulnerable we are to natures splendour!

This next photo with the sea washing over the rock was taken at Point Ellen and this is the rock where waves have claimed some victims.
On our trip when I took this photo, only three days after we had left to go home two more lives were taken from this very point!
Rogue waves, sometimes known as freak waves, monster waves, killer waves, extreme waves are an uncommon ocean phenomenon in which winds, currents, non-linear phenomena such as solitons (self-reinforcing solitary wave) and other circumstances cause a wave to briefly form that is larger than the "average" large occurring wave (the significant wave height of SWH) of that time and place.
Rogue waves seem not to have a single distinct cause, but occur where physical factors such as high winds and strong currents cause waves to merge to create a single exceptionally large wave.
Changing our Blog site

Since we established our new website just a few weeks ago, we've been experimenting with ways of keeping you informed of what we're up to and how you can see more of our photos as we add them.

Our website!

Of course, our website will be our main 'showcase', offering a number of pages, information and images which provide an in-depth look at our photographs and ways you can access them.

We are very proud of our website, and from the comments we have received, our website visitors are impressed too! (We had over 30 comments of congratulations on the site's Blog within days of our website going 'live!)

Our website designer though wasn't satisfied with the look of our original Blog - and he felt it was too complicated to administer by us, which of course, we want to do so that we can update you frequently, from wherever our cameras take us.

Our new blog!

So to cut a long story short, our web designer has migrated our Blog to an easier system, much more visually interesting, and something we can handle ourselves (albiet with a bit of training!)

At left, this is what our new Blog looks like.

It integrates more efficiently with GooglePlus and has an overall better 'feel'.

It can be accessed as a 'free standing' blogsite here: http://wingsandwildlifephotography.blogspot.com.au

and we've integrated it into our website here, for those people who go to our website first: http://www.wingsandwildlifephotography.com.au/our-blog.html

We hope you like the look of our new Blog so check back here often to learn the latest about what we've been up to!WingsandWildlfePhotography.com.auhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414182033571466435noreply@blogger.com30tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8628859823747126633.post-48899534454536994412013-06-17T17:08:00.000+09:302013-07-03T07:27:22.320+09:30The Magic Of Winter...

As winter closes in, we're re-visiting some of our best photos

Winter is a magic time on Kangaroo Island and the Fluerieu Peninsula, but wet and windy conditions do restrict our opportunities to get out and about with our cameras - not to mention the 'wings and wildlife' we like to photograph stay out of the bad weather too!

So we're taking the opportunity to look back at what we believe to be our best photos - and each week we'll be posting one of our photos we're particularly proud of, here on our blog page.

Superb Fairy-wren (female)

To start off, we were very happy with this shot of this little female Superb Fairy-wren Malurus cyaneus, which we managed to photograph at Vivonne Bay on Kangaroo Island.....

Our book 'Vivonne Bay Blue' captures the personalities of these dear little birds and is available from selected outlets on Kangaroo Island and the Fleruieu Peninsula.
Canon EOS 50D
Sigma 150-500mm lens
